Apprenticeship is Alignment

There’s a common misconception that team members are entirely independent and can simply be given objectives and key performance indicators (KPIs) to accomplish on their own. This approach, often referred to as “Management by Objectives,” assumes autonomy without the need for direct guidance. But in our experience, this rarely leads to success.

Team members thrive when they are taught, coached, and guided through specific tasks. This process might involve one-on-one time, working closely together on a proposal, report, or design. Is this micromanaging? Perhaps—but it’s better framed as an apprenticeship.

Apprenticeship is about equipping team members with the skills and understanding to meet the required standards. Our team members who’ve gone through this process often find it deeply fulfilling. It allows them to master a task, gain confidence, and feel the satisfaction of doing something well. They are not left to navigate challenges alone or, worse, feel lost or helpless.

This high-intensity guidance doesn’t last forever. After a few months of focused learning, they’ve mastered the craft and are ready to work independently. The most rewarding outcome of apprenticeship is the alignment it creates—ensuring the team and its members are unified in purpose, quality, and direction.
